he Dual-, Two-in-One-, Twin- or Kangaroo-packaging is a packaging holding two separate containers with two different products, which together form one entity in packaging as well as in product.
In 2006, Italy’s Pasta Barilla, a world leader in pasta products, unveiled its very simple dual-stacked jar package using a shrink sleeve. A neat way to offer two different sized jars in one, the shrink sleeve unitized restaurant-quality pasta sauces in an eye-catching way letting them stand out from the rest on the store shelves.
The design won a Gold Award for Packaging Achievement from the Flexible Packaging Association as well as the DuPont Silver Award.
We have already mentioned original “alter-ego” liqueurs Jekyll & Hyde, launched in 2007 by beer giant Anheuser-Busch.
Ecolab’s nested, stackable, and bundled container of cleaning solution was designed specifically for dispensing cleaning products in industrial and institutional use. It assembles a “work”-spray bottle nicely clicked in the contours of a bulk container. The consumer can refill the spray bottle from the bulk container mounted to the wall. The set, providing for more organized and safer environment, won Best of Show in the National Association of Container Distributors 2007 Packaging Awards Competition.
Chinese liqueur is usually made from blending several liqueurs of different alcohol percentage. This package from Zhen Bao Fang combines a bigger bottle with 46% alcohol liqueur and a small bottle with 68% alcohol liqueur.
Both bottles are moulded in the same style, one perfectly fitting, upside down, as closure for the larger bottle.
Wonder Tablitz’s empty bottle is a real dual packaging. To provide consumers with a complete “cleaning system,” Wonder Tablitz created a patented high-density polyethylene bottle with a recessed cavity in the front panel that houses three tablets in a polyvinyl chloride blister.
A unique dual bottle-in-a-bottle packaging was created for “Sambuca con mosca” (produced by Deutsch Krugmann), a traditional Italian anise liqueur. The idea of the design was to bring liqueur, coffee beans and a book of matches, together. These items are needed to enjoy Sambuca con mosca following a ritual which, according to legend, came into being many centuries ago.
At that time, an elderly lady used to serve her home-made Sambuca to her family. Lured by the sweet flavour, three flies always sat down on the rim of the glass when she was pouring the drink. So the lady came up with the idea of serving her Sambuca with three coffee beans. To be assured that the “flies“ were really dead, the Sambuca was lit before drinking. This ceremony has been practised ever since. Lighting the drink produces an additional effect: the raw beans get roasted in the burning Sambuca within seconds.
The bottle-in-a-bottle created by Greiner Packaging consists of two PET bottles. The inner bottle holds 0.7 litres of Sambuca and the outer bottle offers space for the coffee beans. The coffee beans can be taken out through an opening which has been stamped into the bottle wall and decorated with a label. A book of matches which hangs around the neck can be used to light the anise liqueur.
‘Hair Care Avlon Affirm’ (Avlon Industries) is a two-step treatment for hair care, especially for hairdressing salons. The new 1.8 kg “kangaroo” bucket packaging contains a “built-in space” in which a 115 gr pre-treatment bottle is stored. This merger of two packages avoids the problem that one of the bottles for the pre-treatment and the treatment itself, gets lost or is not used. Created by Tricor Braun.
One more product that we have already mentioned is Bio2TONIC from Beverage Creations. This basically ingenious packaging has failed to hit the market yet due to the manufacturer’s problems with pink-sheets.
Proctor & Gamble’s Ultra Concentrated Dawn Simple Pleasures (373 ml) dishwashing liquid soap, debuted with a 12 gr air freshener beads in the base of the bottle, held in a separate compartment. The PET bottle design — Webb-Scarlett deVlam www.wsdv.co.uk.
Shelf-stable, microwavable Healthy Choice meals from ConAgra Foods are promoted as a healthful, portable lunch option for deskbound employees. The Fresh Mixers line uses several interlocking plastic packaging components that enable quick and handy meal preparation and consumption. Each of the six varieties includes rice or pasta along with a separately packaged serving of sauce and meat.
The technology behind the meals enables the start ingredients and sauces to be separated during storage and preparation to preserve the ‘locked-in’ flavour and texture of both, producing a fresh taste upon preparation.
